Liddell Colliery mines the Lemington, Pikes Gully, Arties, Liddell, Barrett and Hebden coal seams. The product coal from Liddell Colliery includes semi-soft coal and thermal coal. Both coal products are currently exported to Japanese, Korean and other Asian markets.
Liddell Colliery has numerous emplacements of coal tailings dating back to the 1960's, which have been deposited in various areas including old open cut pits and underground workings. Sampling of the tailings has established that some contain residual energy which is of value to the local power stations operated by Macquarie Generation.
Liddell has approval to transport up to 0.5 Mtpa of the old tailings to Macquarie Generation by road trucks along Pikes Gully Road and the New England Highway to either the Liddell or Bayswater power stations to be used in power generation.
